ABSTRACT
In several ways, the Greek and Italian Risorgimento followed parallel paths marked by intense interaction and manifestations of brotherhood. The two peoples, in addition to their geographical proximity and long-standing political, economic and cultural ties, witnessed the birth of similar national and social demands in this historical period. This paper highlights the manifestations of solidarity and the ideological and cultural exchanges that took place between the two peoples during the Risorgimento, and especially during the exodus of Italian revolutionaries to the Ionian Islands (then a British protectorate) and to mainland Greece after the failed Italian uprisings of 1820-21, 1831 and 1848-49. In this context the author investigates the official policies of the British and the Greek authorities towards refugees and how refugees were received by the local Greek populations. Also discussed are their political, military, social, economic and cultural identity, their activities and their impact in the land of their exile. The paper, for the first time, brings together material and information from several different source-types (historical, literary, artistic, journalistic, etc.) from both the Ionian islands and Greece and covers the extensive period from before the Greek Revolution up to the Unity of Italy.
