ABSTRACT
Isometimes think that if Easter 1916 had fallen at the end of March instead of the end of April, then we still wouldn't have independence. It was one thing for Patrick and Willie Pearse to jump on their bicycles in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains when the lambs were veering towards mutton and the daffodils already spent — their fateful departure for the GPO would, I'd imagine, have made for an entirely different scene if it had fallen a month earlier. I like to think that in that era before body warmers and under armour, the patriotic Pearse brothers would have looked out the majestic windows of their Rathfarnham home and concluded, with a shiver, that they'd be frozen to death before they hit Harold's Cross. And, unfortunately, petrified on a bicycle at Leonard's Corner does not a martyr make.
