ABSTRACT
QUICK, cover those table legs, Mrs Shatter is coming. Alan Shatter showed positively Victorian chivalry this week when he said that he was glad his wife didn't see those blue meanies stage their walkout at the AGSI conference. 'I don't think their conduct could be described as courteous or reasonable,' he sniffed. The minister must keep a vial of sal volatile in his pocket in case anyone's discourtesy makes his wife faint. It might have been more gallant to leave her out of the dispute altogether.

TO those who know him, it was a typical Alan Shatter move. Live on Prime Time, with the Justice Minister coming under heavy fire from Pat Kenny and Mick Wallace over the penalty points scandal, he decided to go on the attack. Not for the first time, Alan Shatter played the man, not the ball.
