ABSTRACT
The British director of Insomnia (11.05pm, BBC1), Christopher Nolan, is known for his cerebral style and mega-budget Batman films ($150 million and up). Take a look at how his other films add up… Following (1998) Nolan's debut, a thriller set in London, was paid for out of his own pocket. All involved had fulltime jobs, so shot at weekends only - it took a year to finish. Production Budget: $6,000 Memento (2000) Newmarket films stumped up a princely sum to make this film, written with his brother, Jonathan. Starring Guy Pearce, it was shot in LA over 25 days. Budget: $5M Insomnia (2002) After Memento took $39m worldwide, Nolan caught the eye of one of the 'big six' studios (Warner Bros). He worked with Al Pacino on this remake of a Norwegian thriller. Budget: $46M The Prestige (2006) Signed up for three Batman films, Nolan took a sideways step with this period fantasy. It starred Batman cohorts and fellow Brits Christian Bale and Michael Caine. Budget: $40M Inception (2010) Returning to a selfpenned script, the UCL graduate pulled out all the stops for this mind-boggling sci-fi that explores Nolan's familiar themes of memory and identity. Budget: $160M
