ABSTRACT
The article presents information on patent law in Venetian Republic and its origin by guild, an association of artisans who control the practice of their craft in a particular town. It provides information on artisan and merchant guilds that emerged in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and focused on particular craft including shipbuilding, glass making and wool working. It explores the emergence of patent system for foreigners and Venetian citizens to compete with guilds.
