ABSTRACT
AT THIS time of year, it's hard to avoid panting, sweating runners in training for spring marathons. Most clutch bottles filled with water or energy drinks such as Lucozade. But scientists claim they have found a more effective tonic to help runners recover — the juice from a jar of pickled onions. It sounds improbable, but a study at Brigham Young University in Utah, found it to be effective at reducing the effects of cramp. Test participants were asked to cycle on an exercise bike while the pain of cramp was stimulated electronically in their toes. Some were then given water, others pickle juice. The scientists found the pickle juice relieved cramp 37 per cent faster than drinking water. Unfortunately for runners, the juice is not very palatable ... but then, if you've signed up to run a 26-mile marathon, you must already be a sucker for punishment.
