FAREWELL to Lord Thurlow, aka Francis Edward Hovell-Thurlow-Cumming-Bruce, who has died aged 101. Thurlow was a member of the Communist Party before embarking on a glittering diplomatic career. One of his postings was as High Commissioner for New Zealand, a country which he found beautiful but boring. In a letter to a relative who had asked about his life there, he wrote: 'Flora simply stunning, fauna distinctly dull.' isaac@dailymail.ie
