ABSTRACT
Introduction: Thyroid gland research using the animal models can be very challenging especially when requires removal of the whole gland and hormonal analysis. Despite having similar gross morphological appearance with human's thyroid, thyroid gland in rat is often missed in view of its small size and its delicate structure. In view of this, knowledge on the thyroid gland resection in rat is required prior to the procedure. Objective: This article aimed to provide a systematic guideline of thyroid gland ressection in euthanised rat for researchers who first attempted to do so. Methodology: A Sprague Dawley male rat was used for this procedure. The dissection was carried out via the conventional midline approach with prior euthanasia via intracardiac puncture. Result: The thyroid gland obtained via this method was complete anatomically, not damaged and confined to the underlying trachea. Conclusion: The thyroid gland resection in rodent is a simple procedure. Besides having adequate anatomy knowledge on the rats' cervical regions and the thyroid gland, researchers need to comply with the basic systematic guideline to obtain a good sample for further tissue analyses.
