ABSTRACT
This study aimed to investigate why men do not seek health services annually, in an occupational medicine clinic located in a town in the south of Santa Catarina. The study included 20 patients 20 to 59 years old. Data were collected during October and November 2010. This qualitative and descriptive study used semi-structured interviews which were analyzed from data categorization. The results showed that men often do not seek health services because they fear consultation, for lack of time or did not feel they need medical care. They reported they did not need medical attention unless they become sick and there is no choice but to seek care. Mankind has developed many kinds of healthcare. The care is materialized by actions and interactions in every individual's life and in society, aiming at personal growth, health, well-being and mental health. Men have difficulty in recognizing their needs, cultivating the thought that the household head can not get sick. Besides this cultural issue, the actions and health services have always been focused on children, adolescents, women and elderly people's health. This study had the background of the National Program of Integral Attention to Men's Health to promote health action to understand the singular reality of men, and to increase life expectancy of this population.
