In June 2012 the city of Stralsund decided to sell the historical grammar school library to an antiquarian. Until then the library had been kept in the town archive. The sale provoked many protests so the mayor decided to call in experts to evaluate the collection. Afterwards the sale was canceled and almost all of the books could be recovered. It has not been able to use the library as its content is insufficiently catalogued. As a further result of these events, the public attention has been drawn to the general poor state of preservation of all the holdings of the Stralsund town archive.
