ABSTRACT
Exposure to domestic violence may affect children negatively in the short-term as well as create long-term difficulties in a child's life. Providing timely and appropriate interventions for children who were exposed to domestic violence is critical to reducing these negative outcomes. This article presents promising practices drawn from a national roundtable discussion with experts and practitioners in the field, in-depth interviews with adult survivors and a review of the literature. Key practices derived from these consultations include listening to children's preferences, creating a welcoming environment that allows children to maintain their daily routines when in temporary housing, promoting their strengths, engaging them in safety planning processes, providing on-going support throughout their lifespan, and fostering collaboration among informal social support networks, service providers, and the communities in which children live.
