ABSTRACT
During the Russian-Ottoman war of 1768-1774, a number of military operations took place in the area of Valea Gerului, where the village of Valea Mărului is also situated, in the Covurlui region. Given the solid evidence that the tsarist army uas stationed here for a long period, we believe that Alexander Wasiliewitch Gelhard uas on officer in the Russian army. The respect he was shown by the very construction of the monument makes us think that he was a high ranking officer, perhaps even a general..
