Combination Effects of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ac Toxin and Nucleopolyhedrovirus or Granulovirus of Spodoptera littoralis on the Cotton Leafworm

ABSTRACT
Effect of three entomopathogens, Cry1Ac of Bacillus thuringiensis Berlinar, Spodoptera littoralis nucleopolyhedro virus (SpliNPV) and S. littoralis granulovirus (SpliGV) were tested separately and in a combination against first instar (L1) larvae of S. littoralis in the laboratory. The SpliNPV was more pathogenic than SpliGV and Cry1Ac. The median lethal concentrations (LC50's) for Cry1Ac, SpliNPV and SpliGV were 5.8×10-10 ug/ml, 51918 PIB,s/ml and 321810 PIB,s /ml, respectively. Median lethal time (LT50) was affected significantly by Cry1Ac. The LT50 of SpliGV was longer (39.55 days) than either SpliNPV or Cry1Ac. When larvae were infected, using a suspension they containing both Cry1Ac (5×108 or 5×107 ug/ml) and SpliNPV (833375 and 33335 PIB,s /ml) showed an antagonistic effect and vice versa. The interaction between Cry1Ac (5×108 and 5×107 ug/ml) and SpliGV (3.5×107 or 3.5×106 PIB,s /ml) showed an additive effect when the mortality was due to SpliGV, but when it was due to Cry1Ac, it showed an antagonistic effect. The results suggested that Cry1Ac with SpliNPV showed an antagonistic interaction but Cry1Ac with SpliGV showed an additive interaction.
