The French "artisanat d'art" is supposed to annihilate the historical boundary between art and craft. Through the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, we distinguish two types of "artisans d'art" (the elite craftsmen and the creators), illustrated by two individual portraits, and disclose that the distinction between art and craft remains actually predominant in this professional field. Two ways of being "artisan d'art" can be emphasized, which differ through separated career paths and distinct labour conceptions. Two ways of presenting oneself as "artisan d'art" can also be displayed, since professionals do refer to the opposition between the artistic register and the craft one to position themselves within the field.
