ABSTRACT
Born in India, I was one of ten children to Mervyn and Olive. My father served with the British Army, but it was through my violin-playing mother, who is of Indian heritage, that I discovered my love of music. At the age of ten we moved to the Midlands. I took up the saxophone and at 17 was playing in local nightclubs. When I tried my hand at singing things really started to take off - hampered only by my contracting tuberculosis, which meant a six-month lay-off. My real name isn't very rock 'n' roll, so I came up with a very unusual stage name. I represented England at the Knokke-Heist song contest in Belgium. My first big hit was all about letting go, and kept The Beatles' Strawberry Fields Forever off the No. 1 spot. I've had Jimi Hendrix and The Carpenters opening shows for me, I was friends with Elvis and I've sold over 150m records. Leicester has always had a place in my heart - I sold my Harley-Davidson to help the Air Ambulance Service there and I've been given the Honorary Freedom of the City.
