ABSTRACT
I ALWAYS thought Alex Salmond an adept politician, but I was wrong. For it seems he expects Scotland to go straight into the EU if it becomes independent. Indeed, it must, because its only hope of staving off ruin will be lavish EU subsidies. However, it turns out that this assumption is based on no legal opinion whatsoever, and Scotland may have to join nations such as Serbia in an orderly queue. I long ago wrote off Mr Salmond's chances of success in the independence referendum. When Scottish voters realise there will be no automatic seat on the gravy train, the last nail will be driven into this particular coffin lid.
