Paper quality has a direct impact on a document's permanence and durability and on the costs of its use and protection, i.e. preservation. Permanence becomes important when the content of a document acquires cultural, scientific, historical or artistic value. The preservation of paper documents depends on the quality of the raw materials used for making the paper and the records. It also depends on the technologies used for the production of carriers and records, on conditions of storage and on methods of making such documents available for use. The article is a review of international standard specifications and recommendations for the field of the preservation of paper documents. In some countries these have been adopted as national standards and incorporated into national archival legislations as well as applied in everyday practice.
