Portolan charts (later also bound into atlases) with their graphic components and stylistic elements were a cartographic novelty at the end of the 13th century. They were the first maps to include a wind network and scale, which made it easier for users to determine the distance from their destination and their sailing direction. In the Mediterranean, such charts were produced mostly in Venice and in the Balearic Island of Majorca. The article provides a detailed description of Majorcan portolan charts and atlases, their purpose and methods of compilation; it further describes their makers and users.
