A Novel Algorithm for Frequency Hopping Detection

VHF frequency range is used by a diversity of communication services: military, commercial FM radio, terrestrial TV channels. Cognitive radio technology could provide an effective solution for using this crowded frequency band. Frequency hopping technique is widely spread in VHF military radios. Low probability of interception is one of the main advantages of this technique. This advantage becomes a drawback if cognitive radio in VHF band is to be used. Cognitive radio thru its spectrum sensing capabilities must detect the primary user of the band. If the primary user of the band is a frequency hopper, the detection problem becomes very complex. Present work proposes a novel algorithm for detecting and estimating the parameters of VHF frequency hopping signals. Timefrequency representation thru GABOR transform and HOUGH transform are used in order to detect active signal in a defined frequency band and to calculate central frequency and signal duration. Based on these parameters, intercepted signals are classified in frequency hopping signals and fixed frequency. The proposed algorithm is tested using simulated and real signals.
