ABSTRACT
The article discusses the efforts of African American ordnance plant worker Mamie Johnson to acquire a position with the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant in LaPorte, Indiana, during World War II. It describes a letter Johnson sent to then-U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt that was forwarded to the President's Committee on Fair Employment Practices (FEPC). The article discusses the role of the FEPC and its attempts to combat employment discrimination against African Americans during World War II. It also discusses efforts by African American women to join the war effort domestically.
