ABSTRACT
Output and Sales:The peak season and the launch of new consumer electronics by large firms in the second half of 2012 will give a fillip to Taiwan's TFT-LCD panel component industry. However, it is worth noting that there are still growing uncertainties about the global economy, and there are fears that the peak season may miss expectations. Additionally, there is a little room for an increase in the selling prices, limiting growth in sales of TFT-LCD panel and components manufacturing in Taiwan. Shipments of Television Panels:The downstream firms reduce inventories of liquid crystal televisions in 2012, spurring restocking and increasing shipments of television panels significantly. Panel prices also rise with an increase in demand, slightlyeasing high operating cost pressure on component manufacturers. What's more, to cope with the bottleneck in the crystal television sector, Taiwan's component manufacturers not only branch out into the development of niche products and improve product mix, they also expand production lines to lower the risk of focusing production on some specific products too much. Operating Performance: Radiant Opto-Electronics Corporationand Chi Mei Materials Technology Corporationmanaged to seegrowth in the revenuesin Taiwan inthe first quarter of 2012, albeit a lack of a significant recovery in demand for large sized panels, while the revenuesof the remaining firms declined. Large International Firms: Because of cut-throat competition and the miniaturization of mobile handsets, more and more panel makers are developing thinner glass. Additionally, because of growing demand for various glass, large glass substratemakerswould like to raise the production of thinnerglass to reach theirgoal of large production of glass substrates. In 2012, Corning, a large glass substratemaker, and Avantrate have been promoting thinnerglass. Industry Outlook: Large brand companies will launch new tablet computers and ultrabooks in the third quarter of 2012, and the penetrationof light-emitted diode televisions will continue to rise, further boosting shipments of light-emitted diode backlightmodules, guide light plates and other related key components. Moreover, Taiwanese firms continue to develop new color filter technologies, while large-sized polarizers see an increase in shipment ratio, spurring growth in shipments of related products. Oveall, with the increase in shipments of light-emitted diode backlight modules, guide light plates and large-sized polarizers, Taiwan's TFT-LCD panel components will witness a turnaround in sales in the second half of 2012.
