ABSTRACT
The article explores the significant challenges facing the health care workers (HCWs) with the implementation of South Africa's ambitious programme of anti-retroviral (ARV) therapy. It notes that one of these challenges pertains to human resources which includes the adequacy of staff at the health care facilities both in terms of their number and the appropriate training of personnel. It further addresses critical issues in addition to the problem of human resources including the risk of infection from tuberculosis, the specific context of treating children with HIV, and the emotional impact of their work on HCWs.
