ABSTRACT
The article discusses the history of American sportswear design and branding, particularly the rise of women's sportswear since the 1960s. It addresses the influence of French sportswear design in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as notes the popularity of collegiate apparel in the U.S. in the 1950s. It comments on the introduction of mainstream designer labels to the U.S. market. Designers explored include Betsey Johnson, Donna Karan, and Calvin Klein.
