ABSTRACT
The article discusses the differences between the economic situations in the cities of Coventry and Chester in England in the 1490s which reflect the towns' civic identities and their attitude towards the future. It cites the vulnerability of Coventry to adverse economic climate due to its reliance on the wool trade, and explores Chester's invulnerability to trading slump despite its lack of major industry. Moreover, it compares the administrative histories and Social structure of the two cities.
