ABSTRACT
This article profiles William L. Anthes, president and chief executive officer of the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) and recipient of the 2001 P. Kemp Fain, Jr. Award from the Financial Planning Association. It was his birthday, October 1, 1979, when Anthes moved from Kansas City, Kansas to Denver, Colorado to accept a position as the president of the College for Financial Planning. Interestingly, it was a group of financial planners he had met in Kansas while running the evening educational program division for a local college who had submitted his name to the College for consideration. The dominant and longest running Public Education Center offering of NEFE is the NEFE High School Financial Planning Program (HSFPP), which was developed in the mid-1980s. The HSFPP uses contemporary materials to teach the basics of personal finance to young people while they are developing habits and attitudes about money that will influence them for the rest of their lives. Innovative Thinking is an emerging area for NEFE and represents a formal effort to elicit creative ideas and new perspectives on personal finance, and to communicate them to financial services professionals, educators, the media and the public. Under the leadership of Anthes, NEFE has consistently promoted pro bono work.
