ABSTRACT
The article focuses on research conducted at Parlier, California's UC Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center which used a beneficial fungus in San Joaquin Valley pistachio orchards to protect the nuts from aflatoxin. Discovered in 1960s, Aflatoxin is reportedly produced by strains of fungus Aspergillus flavus found in soil and decaying vegetation. It is noted that pistachio shipments are tested and are rejected in Europe if aflatoxin contamination exceeds 10 parts per billion.
