ABSTRACT
Taiwan is also called the Republic of China. It is a large island off the coast of China, in the Pacific Ocean. For much of its history, Taiwan was ruled by China, or the People's Republic of China. In 1949, China became a communist country. Many people who did not believe in communism fled, or escaped, China and settled in Taiwan. The Chinese government does not recognize Taiwan as an independent or free country. China claims that the island of Taiwan belongs to the People's Republic of China.
