ABSTRACT
The article presents information on the development of the historic nucleus of Split in Croatia in the 19th century that focused on open public spaces. It looks at various projects and proposals that indicate the maturing development of conservation practices and urban planning. It is mentioned that frequent changes in social and political circumstances had a huge impact on heritage assessment.
