Syntheses, Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity of 3-(Aminophenyl)-1,3- Diphenylpropanones, Novel Aza-michael Products

Conjugate addition of N-nucleophiles (aromatic amines) to ɑ, ß-unsaturated ketones (chalcones)has been attempted to yield β-amino ketones. The products were characterized by ESI-MS, FTIR, UV, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic studies. When the aromatic amines were substituted by heterocyclic secondary amines, NaOH was required in stoichiometric quantities for the completion of reactions. Antibacterial activity of the products was studied using one Gram -ve,Escherichia coli and two Gram +ve bacteria Bacillus subtilis and B. cereus. Most of the compounds showed lower inhibition zone at high concentration.
