ABSTRACT
An overview of cognitive changes in the elderly such as personality changes, adaptation to ageing and cognitive ageing is presented. Memory disturbances and their pathophysiology are analysed in detail, particularly in higher age. Attention is given to possibly reversible memory disturbances * depression, * deliria, and * memory changes caused by metabolic disorders. Evaluation methods suitable for general practice are discussed at the end of the article. Conclusions for practice: 1. The process of ageing is followed by cognitive changes, the individual course and intensity are different. 2. Cognitive changes can substantially influence the overall status of the elderly. 3. There is a need to actively determine the cognitive decline through a frame of regular examinations to diagnose dementia, depression and other pathologies early and treat them effectively.
