ABSTRACT
The article discusses the history and development of an innovative and self-reliant mindset for amateur inventors and scientists starting with Stewart Brand's 1968 "Whole Earth Catalog," which provided information on a variety of do-it-yourself projects, and continuing through the rise of the Internet. Benefits of the rapidly increasing power of tools, especially computers, available to the average person and the Internet's ability to facilitate communication and innovation are discussed.
