LOWLY, painfully, a new King's Cross is emerging from the dereliction and chaos that, for 25 years, has consumed London's biggest development. It has been an intriguing wait. Visitors to the spectacular hemisphere that is the new King's Cross booking hall should pass into the ticket office and gaze up at the ceiling. They will there see a curious row of large Victorian brackets holding up a passage. They are battle honours in a fierce war, conducted over years between the architect, John McAslan, and English Heritage. It was a battle EH won.
