ABSTRACT
6 ACTORS IN SEARCH OF A DIRECTOR Charing Cross Theatre, WC2 AFTER 15 minutes of this latest outpouring from writer/director Steven Berkoff, I settled back in anticipation. It had been a grisly start, no doubt, with six pampered actors on a film set wittering on about lukewarm coffee and the multiple takes demanded by a fastidious director. It's the stuff of a thousand send-ups of the profession, although markedly less amusing. But still, I thought, it won't carry on like this. It can't. Maybe someone would throw a grenade into the room to kick off a tense hostage drama? Maybe the zombies would come? Armageddon? But no. Nothing happens, except more of the same. Berkoff subjects us to 90 minutes of a hideous actorly in-joke, just without the jokes. This gruesome sextet, three women and three men, spout platitudes of astounding banality, about the "sacrifice" of their work. They're being driven mad waiting for their call from the director and we, the poor, hapless audience, are being driven even madder by watching them waiting.
