The article reports on the lecture delivered by Washington state chief veterinarian Leonard Eldridge at the Washington State University's Emerging and Exotic Diseases of Animals class. Eldridge claims that veterinarians will be the first line of defense against infectious agents that can have devastating impact on the economy and public health. He enumerates some of the diseases that can threaten agriculture, animal and public health, including Q fever, West Nile virus, rabies and avian flu.
