ABSTRACT
The article announces the seven million dollar contract by Alstom Grid to modernize three outdated Static VAr Compensators on the 170-mile Alaska Intertie transmission line owned by the Alaska Energy Authority. The modernization is described to include replacement of the core power electronics and thyristors, installation of new digital controls and user interfaces, and upgrade of the cooling systems. The existing units are presented to be vulnerable to malfunctions and are outdated.
