ABSTRACT
THERE are few companies more despised in this country than Atos. The healthcare subsidiary of the Parisbased IT firm is paid 100 million annually by the Department of Work and Pensions to conduct "workplace capability assessments" to see whether disabled people are, indeed, disabled . One man who had lost a third of his body weight due to a lung condition was awarded zero points in his assessment you need 15 to qualify for any help from the government. He died three months later. Another was told terminal cancer was no barrier to being a productive worker. There have been successful appeals against more than a third of its assessments so Atos not only ruins lives, it costs taxpayers further millions in legal fees.
