ABSTRACT
The authors focus on the evaluation of progress and achievements in physical education (PE) lessons by high school students of Lithuania's biggest cities. The students' attitude towards assessment objects, the social aspects of student's and PE teacher's assessment, the influence of the assessment on students' physical activity during and after PE lessons are discussed. The results of the study indicate that most of the high school students prefer the grades to be used in PE lessons, an effort being the main criterion of the assessment. From the students' viewpoint, self-assessment and PE teacher's evaluation are in consistency and do not affect their relationships. The evaluation during PE lessons has no significant effect on students' physical activity: the assessment influences students' physical activity levels only during PE lessons, which does not correspond to the physical activity guidelines. The PE teachers are challenged to find other means of motivating students to be physically active outside the school.
