ABSTRACT
The article reports on a research study being conducted by Noble Foundation scientists wherein they generate tannins in a part of the alfalfa plant beyond the seed coat as potential remedy to reduce pasture bloat in animals alfalfa that graze on alfalfa. Scientist Jerome Verdier is responsible for discovering the defect in a gene encoding a transcription factor in alfalfa plants with light seed coats. The study is expected to lead to bloat control and improved forage quality for agriculture.
