ABSTRACT
The article discusses the common law copyright and its effect on Kentucky, and particularly the legacy of the 1867 court case of Grigsby v. Breckinridge concerning ownership of a series of personal letters. The author comments on the special nature of personal correspondence, the historical rights of married women to their husbands' property, and the right to privacy. He also examines the right of an author to control the first publication of his or her work.
