Internet technology is changing the way many firms do business. However, the capabilities made possible by information technologies, combined with the rapid adoption of the Internet around the globe, are also changing the competitive landscape. Can traditional models of competitive strategy be used to achieve sustainable advantages? The authors suggest that sustainability of competitive advantages is possible, but not with traditional strategies. They argue that relying on a single form of competitive advantage will lead to the rapid decline of advantages by competitors. However, by 'combining' strategies in ways that capture market opportunities and make the best use of the new technology, competitive advantages can be sustained. In addition to combining strategies, the authors address the potential pitfalls associated with Internet-based strategies.
