ABSTRACT
Using data provided from the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START), the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), information gathered by the International Crisis Group, and "The Evolving Terrorist Threat to Southeast Asia: A Net Assessment" by the RAND Corporation, the article researches national security responses to terrorist activity in Indonesia and the Philippines between 1991 and 2008. Terrorist and insurgent groups considered are Jemaah Islamiyah, Moro Islamic Liberation Front, Abu Sayyaf Group, and the Islamist Free Aceh Movement, also referred to as Gerakan Aceh Merdeka.
