ABSTRACT
The article discusses the the history of Spanish America, with a focus on the development of the term and concept of Creole and Creolism. Topics discussed include background on the origins of Creole and the phenomena it describes, values attributed to Creolism, from the idea of Creolism as cultural adaptation within transplanted European communities to the idea of Creolism as devolution of culture; and the relationship between the formation of Creole identity and 19th century concepts of racial and national identities.
