ABSTRACT
The article examines the environmental causes of diseases. Comparing disease proportions caused by genetic and environmental factors is the first step towards understanding the aetiologies of chronic diseases such as cancer and vascular disease. The nine environmental risk factors which according to the World Health Organization contribute to population attributable fractions (PAFs) for cancer mortality are cited.
