This section presents an interview with Bob Barr, Janet McCallen, Jim Barnash and Elizabeth Jetton, executives at the Financial Planning Association (FPA), on the membership structure of the association. Beginning in 1998, the leadership of the predecessor organizations to the FPA, the International Association for Financial Planning (IAFP) and the Institute of Certified Financial Planners (ICFP), began drafting a vision and structure for what a new membership organization representing and leading the financial planning profession might look like. Over time, through extensive meetings of a designated working group created by the IAFP and ICFP, as well as significant feedback from its respective memberships, agreement was reached regarding a starting point from which the new FPA could move forward as the voice for the financial planning profession and, in doing so, would honor and embrace the missions and history of its former organizations. A core ideology and memorandum of intent were developed for FPA, including a mission statement, objectives and core values. As part of the unification discussions, it was agreed that the Certified Financial Planner marks, as a symbol and recognized process for identifying competence and ethics in financial planning, would serve as the cornerstone for the organization. INSET: FPA Individual Membership.
