ABSTRACT
Determines the frequency and pattern of development of specific drug resistance mutations for HIV reverse transcriptase in patients switched from zidovudine to didanosine therapy. Serum HIV RNA preparation for virus burden; CD4 T-cell changes related to HIV reverse-transcriptase genotype; Relation of changes in serum virus burden in patients receiving didanosine monotherapy to the genotype at codon 74 of HIV reverse-transcriptase gene.

Liver toxicity is one of the most relevant adverse effects of antiretroviral therapy. Within the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), efavirenz can be considered a safer drug for the liver than nevirapine. In fact, the frequency of severe increased liver enzymes in patients...

In this work, we show that vertical, high aspect-ratio (HAR) photonic crystals (PhCs), consisting of periodic arrays of 5 µm wide gaps with depth of 50 µm separated by 3 µm thick silicon walls, fabricated by electrochemical micromachining, can be used as three-dimensional microincubators,...

Since the mid-1980s, the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) have established their position as valuable antiretroviral (ARV) agents in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Today, NRTIs still constitute the backbone of highly active ARV therapy...

Background. Hypersusceptibility to nonnucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) was described in association with reverse-transcriptase (RT) mutations conferring resistance to nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). We evaluated the effect of RT mutations associated with...

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 resistance to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors such as 3'- azido-2', 3'-dideoxythymidine (AZT) can arise through mutations in the coding region of reverse transcriptase (RT) that enhance the enzyme's ability to remove the drug after it has been...

Vif is an HIV accessory protein whose primary function is to negate the action of APOBEC3G, a naturally occurring cellular inhibitor of HIV replication. Vif acts by binding to APOBEC3G, inducing its protein degradation within infected cells and reducing its levels in progeny virions....

Among 128 patients routinely receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy in an HIV/AIDS outpatient clinic in Cameroon, 16.4% had drug resistance after a median of 10 months. Of these, 12.5% had resistance to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), 10.2% to non- NRTIs, and 2.3% to...
