ABSTRACT
The article discusses the exclusion of women in the U.S. military's direct ground combat. It cites the order of Major General (MG) Tony Cucolo, commander of 3rd Infantry Division Task Force Marine in Iraq, prohibiting soldiers from becoming pregnant while assigned to the Task Force Marine (Area of Responsibility). It states that mixed-gender units have overcome issues of sexual tension, relationships, and sexual misconduct through leadership, discipline and by providing personal privacy. According to the exclusionists, the exclusion policy is said to be necessary because the closer a woman is to the enemy, the more difficult it will be to evaluate her.
