ABSTRACT
This article outlines the views of students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, who have been successfully recruited to primary (elementary) initial teacher education courses in England about their choice of primary school teaching as a career. It offers insight into their motives and their reservations about teaching together with indications of ways in which recruitment to teaching could be enhanced. The evidence derives from a questionnaire survey of 1,611 new entrants to teaching and 148 follow-up interviews. The findings are illustrated through extracts from the transcripts of three student case studies in order to display the range of students' thinking and the context in which it is located.
