The article discusses the short story "Cafeteria Mentality" by Elaine Hayes who is the winner of the 2011 short story contest held in Alberta which she relates with her childhood. It states the LaSalle natural-gas explosion inspired her to write the short story which theme focuses on parental protectionism. It also notes that she studied creative writing at the University of Calgary.
