The article discusses the c. 1766-1769 painting "Portrait of Maria Walpole, Duchess of Gloucester," by Nathaniel Dance, located at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). The author discusses the iconography of Maria Walpole, duchess of Gloucester, and her embodiment of the court of King George III of England.
