Performance Improvement with Coding of Free Space Optical Ground to Satellite Link in Atmospheric Turbulence Environment

Atmospheric effects can deteriorate the intensity of the received signal and increases the bit error rate (BER). However, the use of error correcting codes in FSO system can mitigate the effect of turbulence and helps in improving the system performance. In this paper, performance of FSO link without and with coding is investigated for coherent (sub-carrier BPSK and QPSK) and non-coherent (OOK) modulation schemes. It has been observed that LPDC codes offer considerable performance advantage over convolution codes in terms of coding gain for varying strength of turbulence in the atmosphere. For example, convolution code with viterbi decoding yields coding gain of about 1 dB while LDPC codes shows the improvement of about 4.5 dB at a turbulence level of 0.2 and BER = 10-4 for different modulation schemes.
